How to Maximize Your Time

We all have the same amount of time, so why does it seem that some people make more money and get more done with their time than you do?  They’ve learned to maximize their efficiency.  With these easy steps, you can do the same.

Let’s pretend you have everything that needs to be done in your life written down on paper.  I know you don’t but let’s pretend (and we’ll talk about why you don’t have it written down another time).  We’re going to take that list and put it through our little efficiency machine.

  1. Eliminate it!

Let’s get rid of all the things that shouldn’t be on your list first.  If you answer no to these questions, get rid of them.

  • Is it important?

  • Would anyone notice if I didn’t do it?

2. Automate it!

We live in a world full of technology.  The beauty of this is that we can automate many of the tasks we need to do every day.  Mailing lists, client follow-ups, text blasts, and paying bills can all be automated.  If the answer to the next set of questions is yes, it’s time to automate.

  • Is this a maintenance task?

  • Could there be a system (computer program) that could do this for me?

3. Delegate it!

Asking for help can be hard, but you have to believe that asking for help is a good thing as a business owner.  When you ask for help, you employ people, and you help them to gain new skills.  Ask these questions to determine if you’re ready to delegate.

  • Do I have people to help?

  • Have they achieved the desired goal before?

STOP:  If you answered no to either of these questions, consider outsourcing, hiring, or training new people to help.

4. Do it!

Now that you’ve taken a ton of stuff off your plate, let’s handle what’s left.  You’ve got two choices: do it now or do it later.  Let’s figure out which one to do.

  • Do it now

    • Is it strategically important?

    • Do I have to do this now?

    • Do I have to do this now?

  • Do it later (back to the to-do list you go)

    • Is it a nice-to-have?

    • Can it wait?
